Major Hat Tip to Bill Fehr and the subject Patrick HarringtonLincoln Harris Dilworth Project Goes Down In Flames
Posted on 08:08 by baba ji
Does the stunning defeat of a re-zoning request signal a change in direction for Charlotte City Council? Could be......
From the Charlotte Observer:
A controversial rezoning request to build a Walgreens drug store and office building in Dilworth was rejected by Charlotte City Council Monday night, delighting neighbors who had waged an aggressive campaign of e-mails and yard signs against the project.
Developer Lincoln Harris’s rezoning lost 9-3, with only Warren Cooksey, Andy Dulin and David Howard supporting it.
The developer wanted to build a Walgreens and a two-story office building on two acres at East Morehead Street and Kenilworth Avenue. To move forward, Lincoln Harris would have to demolish several buildings, some of which were built at the turn of the century.
Lincoln Harris appeared to make a last-minute attempt to sway council members.
In an e-mail sent to council member Patsy Kinsey, who represents the area, a Lincoln Harris executive said the developer has an alternative plan for site that would contain “none of the softened commercial edges” in its Walgreens plan.
“I have come to the conclusion, based upon a number of discussions, these …neighbors were told by a core group of opponents that if the Lincoln Harris petition were to be denied , we will simply ‘go away’ and the property will remain the same,” wrote Alex Kelly, Lincoln Harris vice president. “This email is to confirm that this statement is completely false.”
The e-mail then suggested a backup development plan would have more impact on neighbors, and that it would be in Dilworth’s best interests to approve the original rezoning request.
“This is a serious decision....which could have a detrimental effect on other’s property values,” Kelly wrote.
The e-mail said that the alternative development plan would have “no development concessions offered to the neighborhood. All of the negotiated concessions will go away.”
Cedar's Take: Cooksey and Dulin always side with the developers, large and small. But without fellow Republican Edwin Peacock who often played both sides it was a dead horse way before the vote.
Cedar Posts has been asked why people feel Cooksey and Dulin are in developers pockets and what did Lincoln Harris VP Alex Kelly do wrong?
By illustration, take the CHA project in Ballentyne where Cooksey "washed his hands" by saying there was nothing he could do to oppose the low income project. In the end the shady deal was exposed, a massive fraud complete with developer kick backs, and was scraped.
As far as Alex Kelly, he is a total ass clown, and poster child for how not to deal with neighborhoods.
By contrast look at they way Autobell courted the folks in Southpark. That car wash may be the most over landscaped operation in the country but it began turning a profit on day one.
The demand was so great they didn't even have a grand opening, they just opened the doors.
Why? Because Chuck Howard went out of his way to work with his neighbors.
Alex Kelly's Vaseline or baseball bat method just didn't work.
So why did council members vote down the request?
Perhaps they have noted that much of the re-zoning completed in the past to accommodate developers like Lincoln Harris has left East Charlotte in a shambles. Charlotte's urban blight in East Charlotte and along the Independence and University corridors can be traced back to re-zoning votes approved at the request of developers like Lincoln Harris and not through well planned urban development.

Monday Odds and Ends

Another CMPD Homicide Investigation - The news report was standard and just all too familiar, "Charlotte-Mecklenburg homicide detectives are investigating a shooting Saturday that left one man dead."
On the first really cold night of the 2012 holiday season, another black male lost his life to gunfire in East Charlotte.
On Saturday CMPD Officers responded to a "call for service" along the 7500 block of Shady Lane and later provided the standard press release stating that the vic's name was being withheld until family had been notified. A rather cold announcement on a rather cold night.
Shady Lane is in an area that at one time was a quiet white middle class neighborhood, filled with nice tidy homes with larger than average size lots. Many of the homes were built in the 1980'a where Saturday afternoons were spent raking leaves and tending to young children.
But Shady Lane suffers from the backwash of nearby apartment complexes that have become run down cesspools of human refuse.
Meanwhile, police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
Combined with a murder in Grier Heights on Wednesday CMPD Officers were busy over the Thanksgiving Holiday, seems a certain segment of our population doesn't understand the basic concept of Thanksgiving.
Newk's Blakney in Charlotte - I like the place, but they really need a serious management change. Great food, but wow is the place nasty.
Sunday we walk in the door the girl at the cash register says "Welcome to Newk's" and then proceeds to sneeze all over the rack of silverware she is rolling. No once or twice but three times, then looking rather confused she decides to dab on some hand sanitizer, before she takes our order.
I'm not sure which is more cringe worthy girl sneezing on the silverware or the view under my just "cleaned" table?
On Thanksgiving Day Cpl. Carnes and his wife were flown to Dallas Texas to watch the Dallas Cowboys play the Washington Redskins, as well as receive a special VIP tour before, during, and after the game.
The story from NBC affiliate NBC5 in Dallas is here

Update on Josh "Tank" Watts - According to several sources "Tank" has been fired from his part time security job with the Charlotte Bobcats, and may also be permanently banned by the Panthers as he has been deemed a security risk.
Apparently a reporter, from the Charlotte Observer has attempted to meet with Josh "Tank" Watts to do a follow up story, but Watts has backed out.
Moosehead Bar and Grill has seen business return to normal but not without some serious damage control and a lot of effort. If one comment is correct the owner Chris Nielson, himself a Navy vet, had a severe "counseling session" with employees working at the time of the incident, and has banned "Tank" from the establishment as well.

The same kid who proudly declared our table "all ready" at another booth below.
Whoa! How about a little "busboy" training? Restaurant 101 never put the bus tray on the seats! We weren't the only couple who noticed the dirty floors and wet seats.
Trouble is the place is run by a bunch of part time high school kids most who stand around with their hands in their pockets. They could cut the kid staff in half and hire some professionals and have a nice operation, otherwise in a year they'll be gone.
Marine Cpl Carnes - On November 13, Corporal Garrett Carnes was released from the hospital after undergoing additional operations to deal with surgical wound complications.
On Thanksgiving Day Cpl. Carnes and his wife were flown to Dallas Texas to watch the Dallas Cowboys play the Washington Redskins, as well as receive a special VIP tour before, during, and after the game.

November 11, Veterans Day
Posted on 13:05 by baba ji
Cedar Posts is working the other job this weekend but can't let the day pass without acknowledging that today, November 11th is Veterans Day.
Often confused as the fall Memorial Day, the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month formally marks the end of World War 1 and has been used ever since to "remember all" who have fought our country's wars.
Today for so many reasons we are surrounded by veterans, so many go about their lives unseen, your doctor, your mailman, the cop standing in the rain on the corner directing traffic after an accident, the nurse at the hospital who calmed your son when he broke his arm climbing the tree in your back yard.
So with that in mind I offer this repost:

Yet I don’t know him...
Over many years I’ve noticed the two flags that fly from the large flag pole in his back yard. And because of those flags and the regularity they fly, I know a little something about him just the same, for he flies our country’s flag daily and below it the Marine Corps Standard.
He is punctual I’ve discovered, and if I time my morning run just right I’ll pass by his home as he raises those flags.
So, this morning I make the effort to rise early and Madison my five year old Lab and I head out the door before the sun warms the pavement beneath our feet.
The air is brisk, and our pace is easy, down the long street around the corner and up to the top of the hill. It is a mile or so from my home where we finally stop and it is from this vantage point I can peer down the hill into his back yard.
The cold brushed aluminum flag pole now bare will soon spring to life, and right on time with purposeful steps the unknown solider walks out the door.
He is a man of some age, and so his walk is not as steady as I suspect it once was. On this morning as he’s done so many mornings before his hand reaches for halyard and he takes the brass clips in hand, then in one fluid movement the flag of our country is quickly hoisted to the top of the pole and unfurls in the chilly fall breeze.
He steps back and offers a proud salute and seconds later the Marine Corps Colors unfurl as well and with it another salute.
I watch as he turns heel smartly and walks towards the house but just before he disappears behind the door, he turns for one last look at the red white and blue that he proudly flies each day. And while he pauses, all time stands still.
Perhaps it is in this moment he reflects on his life, the friends and fellow Marines he left behind in some far away place and his war.
His war is unknown to me, but Korea I’d guess given his age, too young for World War II and too old for Viet Nam.
Korea, with names like Chosin, Inchon, and Hwachon with the 1st Marine Division or with the 5th Marines at outposts, nicknamed "Reno," "Vegas" and "Carson" where the marines held their ground despite heavy losses after Reno fell to the enemy. I don’t know him and Korea remains the often, forgotten war.
Koren War Memorial Washington, DC
The leaves rustle in the wind, they depart in droves from the trees, and then scatter about the ground. Madison sitting politely next to me nudges my hand with her cold, wet black nose. She' ready to go, but we stay just a little longer and watch the flags.
In my heart the gratefulness is palatable and I wonder aloud who is this veteran, what battles did he fight for my freedom, what stories does he tell, and what stories he does not?
He is an unknown soldier, who is always a marine, yet there are so many unknown soldiers who live their lives in quiet contemplation next to ours and I am so truly thankful for their service and sacrifices they have made for our country.
The flags of the United States of America and the United States Marine Corps snap smartly in the stiff autumn wind, for Corps and Country, these unknown soldiers are Semper Fi.

Wednesday Change Up
Posted on 14:22 by baba ji
Years ago I picked this medal up in the parking lot of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
All this time I've held on to it having no idea what it says or who is depicted on the front.
The writing in not Arabic, but it doesn't seem to be Hebrew either. And the profile looks remarkably like Anwar Sadat the Egyptian President, which if that is the case Hebrew would make even less sense.
Any suggestions?
And finally I'd be thrilled to locate the rightful owner.
Cedar Posts Update: Hat tip to Jeff Taylor for suggesting the writing is Amharic and the portrait is of Haile Selassie. Also for the suggestion that a Charlotte Cabbie probably dropped it.
Turns out Jeff is right, as it is "The Medal of the Campaign" circa 1941 and once included a ribbon.
Circular bronze medal with integral small imperial Ethiopian crown suspension; the face with a portrait in relief of Emperor Haile Selassie I in military uniform facing left, inscribed ‘Gold is Tested by Fire’ in Amharic above, crossed curved swords and palm branches below; the reverse with the Amharic inscription ‘Hope established in faith is a proven instrument of victory’
The Medal of the Campaign was created by Emperor Haile Selassie I for those Ethiopians who remained within Ethiopia during the Italian invasion and occupation of 1935 to 1941 and who worked and fought to restore their country’s independence. Ethiopia had maintained her independence for more than two thousand years when Italian forces invaded in 1935 and eventually took control, annexing the country in 1936. In 1941 patriotic Ethiopian, British and Commonwealth troops liberated the country and Emperor Haile Selassie re-entered Addis Ababa in triumph on 5 May.

CMPD Captain Fired
Posted on 23:34 by baba ji
Well liked, career CMPD Captain Chuck Adkins has apparently been fired by Chief Monroe. Adkins had been with the department since 1991.
Adkins who served under three different department chiefs found himself in Chief Monroe's cross hairs early last year when he got into a altercation with a 16 year neighborhood thug Jamel Malik Williams.
According to news reports from January of this year, the teen was charged with assaulting Captain Adkins but blamed the fight on Adkins putting dog feces in a friend’s mailbox.
The issue was later resolved and Adkins kept his job.
However, sources tell Cedar Posts that Adkins again found himself the center of controversy when he disclosed that he refused to help the victim of an apparent kidnapping and assault that came to his residence recently.
The victim presented herself at Capt Adkins home late one evening, and later became the subject of a missing persons case. No word on the status of the victim.
It is also unclear if Captain Adkins is appealing the firing.
Cedar Posts Bonus: Jamel Malik Williams has been arrested in December of 2011 charged with four felonies and one misdemanor, and again in May of this year again charged with two breaking and entering felonies. William while only 16 weighes in at 240 pounds and is a high school dropout.
Cedar Posts Update: A couple of people from the MSM called over to ask CMPD what was what. CMPD's answer was the usual "I don't know what you're talking about". This is of course CMPD's MO/SOP and the same thing they tried to say (albeit briefly) with Marcus Jackson.
You can expect the formal answer will be something along the lines of "he's still on the payroll". This is all fair in personnel issues, but this is more than Adkins was a bad cop and Monroe wanted to get him off the force. This is a missing persons case, and apparently Adkins was the last to see the woman alive.
Cedar's Take: Personally I think the firing is a little heavy handed since Adkins outed himself. Confession of your sins is normally a pretty good reason for not being fired unless the Chief has it in for you in the first place.
Don't anyone get all worked up about failing to render aid, after all Vicki Foster has said publicly she wouldn't help anyone if they were not a Christian. I man had been attacked before by neighborhood thugs so maybe he didn't feel like dealing with another nut case. I'm not saying it is right, just that many CMPD Officers have committed much more serious transgressions with little if any consequences.

HMS Bounty Captain "I Must Admit I Love Chasing Hurricanes"
Posted on 07:26 by baba ji
Amazing story of the sinking of the Bounty and the loss of her Captain and one crew member continues to unfold.
Now a video interview has surfaced where Bounty's captain Robin Walbridge is reported to tell the reporter that he loves "chasing hurricanes".
Leaving safe harbor as a storm closes in on you is not a bad idea, "heading east" to avoid the storm, not a bad idea either.
But why the change in course? First reports that HMS Bounty is proceeding due east to avoid Hurricane Sandy, then a change in course to SW to cut across the "bow" of Sandy as her forecast calls for the storm to turn into the East Coast.
On Sunday Bounty found herself between the graveyard of the Atlantic and a fast approaching monster storm.
What chain of events caused this tragic sinking to occur?
Comparisons to Andrea Gail and SV Fantome are, as expected everywhere. Andrea Gail, was "working", Fantome was lost when the owners ordered the vessel to sea. Both are working ships, time critical missions that required some risk taking. So what was so important that Bounty cut across the path of Sandy, putting her and her crew in great peril? Sailing directly into the storms path, why?
Why was the vessel taking on water? What repairs or mods were completed in Maine that changed the ship and her ability to "weather" a storm.
Did the NHC's Cat 1 influence the Captain's course change or was it equipment failure?
The facts will come out and what a story this will be.
Some pretty good background information, with much detail is here.
